Editorial Policy

Updated

Sources first

Every legal rule we state comes from a primary source: a statute, a regulation or a court decision. We cite it next to the rule. Secondary sources are used only to find primary ones.

Plain language

We write for people dealing with an injury, not for lawyers. Short sentences, defined terms and worked examples with real numbers.

Review

Articles and state rules are checked against their sources before publishing and reviewed by a licensed attorney where one is assigned for that state. Each page shows when it was last updated or checked.

Independence

Advertising and referral partnerships never affect a calculator result or what an article says. Writers and reviewers do not know which firms participate in the referral program.

Updates

We re-check every state’s rules at least twice a year and whenever a legislature changes one of them. Pages are updated, not quietly rewritten: material changes are noted.

Corrections

Found an error? Report it and we will check it against the source and fix it if it is wrong.
