MedPay Calculator

See what medical payments (MedPay) coverage pays after a crash, regardless of fault, and whether your insurer may ask to be repaid from a settlement.

A rough estimate, not a prediction or an offer. Real settlements depend on the facts, the insurance available and negotiation. Talk to a personal injury attorney about your case.

What MedPay is

Medical payments coverage is optional auto coverage in most at-fault states. It pays medical bills for you and your passengers after a crash, regardless of fault, up to a limit such as $1,000, $5,000 or $10,000. It can also pay health insurance deductibles and copays.

MedPay and your settlement

Some states and policies let your insurer recover MedPay from your settlement with the at-fault driver (subrogation). Others do not. The calculator flags the issue when you expect a settlement; your policy and state law decide the answer.

MedPay or PIP?

PIP, used in no-fault states, covers medical bills and lost income. MedPay covers medical bills only. A few at-fault states offer both.

Questions people ask

Does MedPay pay if the crash was my fault?

Yes. MedPay pays regardless of fault.

Is MedPay worth having if I have health insurance?

It can be, because it pays deductibles and copays and covers passengers who may not have insurance.
