What you can claim
When another driver caused the crash, their insurer owes you the reasonable cost of a comparable rental car while yours is repaired, or until a total loss is paid. If you did not rent a car, many states let you claim loss of use: the value of going without, usually measured by a comparable rental rate.
Reasonable time
The insurer pays for a reasonable repair time. Delays caused by the insurer, such as a slow inspection, should not shorten your rental. Ask for extensions in writing.
Your own policy
Rental reimbursement on your own policy usually has a daily and total limit, such as $40 a day for 30 days. The calculator applies a daily limit if you enter one.
Questions people ask
Can I get loss-of-use money without renting a car?
In many states, yes, for the time you were without a car.
Do I get a car the same size as mine?
The at-fault insurer owes a comparable vehicle, not a basic economy car if you drive a truck or minivan.
