VA Combined Disability Rating Calculator

Combine VA disability ratings the way the VA does, using “VA math” and the bilateral factor, to find your combined rating.

A rough estimate, not a prediction or an offer. Real settlements depend on the facts, the insurance available and negotiation. Talk to a personal injury attorney about your case.

The math

Why VA ratings do not add up

The VA combines ratings using the combined ratings table in 38 C.F.R. § 4.25. Each rating applies to the “efficiency” left after the higher ratings. A 50% rating leaves 50% efficiency; a 30% rating applied to that takes 15 more, for a combined 65%, not 80%.

Rounding

After combining, the VA rounds the result to the nearest 10. Values ending in 5 round up, so 65% becomes 70% and 64% becomes 60%.

The bilateral factor

When you have ratings on both arms or both legs, the VA combines those first, then adds 10% of that value before combining with your other ratings (38 C.F.R. § 4.26). Tick “Bilateral” for those ratings.

Monthly payment

Your monthly compensation depends on your combined rating and dependents. The VA publishes the current rate tables each December at va.gov.
